Healthy Cinnamon Rolls | Gluten-Free, High-Protein

The moment you’ve all been waiting for - our infamous “Healthy Cinnamon Roll” recipe is finally here! Our goal with this recipe was to keep it as simple, healthy, and tasty as possible. There are a million different healthy cinnamon roll recipes out there but we aren’t big on spending loads of time in the kitchen (it’s a personal problem) so we stuck to the basics. They should take you about 15 - 20 minutes including cooking time which is pretty awesome for a healthy treat. It’s probably important to note that while the macros are solid for a baked good, they still aren’t 100% “clean” because they do include a protein powder and sugar-free jello (aka not natural).

These also might take a little tweaking on your end but we promise they’re worth experimenting with! Be sure to check our product notes and short explanations included in the recipe itself (for example, sprinkling the cutting board with a bit of flour is a must otherwise you’re going to be left with batter sticking to your hands and everything else other than the pan!).

Prosper Wellness Kitchen Ingredient Selections:

  • Baking Flour: In a perfectly clean baking world we would have used a simple/single ingredient as the base of these baked treats but in all honesty, the combination of a few is pretty important and is what works best for keeping the rolls intact and not a disastrous texture. We used Bob’s Red Mill GF 1-to-1 Baking Flour for this specific baking episode and it was fabulous. In the past, we’ve also toyed around with pre-made protein pancake mixes for an extra high protein version using Birchbenders and FlapJacked (includes milk) - both turned out awesome. We'd honestly probably recommend a good pancake mix for an overall better taste and macro profile.

  • Protein Powder: Protein powders can be tough. We’ve really struggled to find the right fit for both our taste preferences and health needs (lactose-free, high-protein, quality ingredients, etc.). Baking WITH protein powder adds a layer of complexity to the situation too - anyone who has ever tasted burnt/grainy protein powder knows what we mean by this. For this particular recipe, we played with two Isopure “Zero Carb” version flavors: Cookies & Cream and Vanilla Salted Caramel. The basic Isopure line seems to be filtered from enough lactose to work for our digestive systems but we also plan on trying their plant-based version as well as a few other uber clean protein companies like Nuzest. We honestly suggest sticking to whatever works for YOU so long as it works as a baking product (don’t blame us if you get a grainy mess of awfulness please hehe). The flavor of your powder will be an important factor as well so try to use something lighter like vanilla, cinnamon, cake, etc. (although a chocolate or peanut butter cinnamon roll doesn’t sound half bad, hmm...we might be onto something).

  • Sugar-Free Pudding: Alright, we must admit we have a total love-hate relationship with “sugar-free” products. They’re often filled with crazy ingredients that you can’t even begin to pronounce BUT they do help avoid the food category we all need to cut out as much as possible - good ‘ole sugar. The only store-bought sugar-free pudding we’ve been able to find on the market so far that isn’t crazy expensive and loaded with artificial ingredients is “Simply Delish.” We actually ended up using the infamous “Jell-O” brand in this recipe but highly recommend trying out simply delish for a cleaner version. The vanilla, butterscotch, and cheesecake flavors all worked really well for the batter. For the icing, we’ve only experimented with white chocolate cheesecake and it was the perfect “cream cheese-like flavor” substitution.
